Tsing San in Shandong Province, China and San Fele in the Vulture region of Basilicata, Italy

"...one's motherland offered a richer life, no matter how materially abundant it might be elsewhere. The qi of the land, water, and air was drenched in antiquity." - Gong Baozai.

This is what Gong Baozai told his Chinese-American disciple Michael Guen when discussing the importance of his returning to China to show respect and to connect to his ancestors and their spirit. Gong Baozai lived with his teacher Gong Baotian from an early age in their village of Tsing San in Shandong Province in China. Shandong means "East Mountains" and Tsing San means "Green Mountain." I am inspired by the great similarities I find between Gong Baozai's motherland and that of my Lucano ancestors in the Vulture Region (Mount Vulture was a volcanoe which is now extinct) of Basilicata, Italy. Please view the following photos to see what I observe. San Fele sits 2,835 feet above sea level on very "Green Mountains." My genetic ancestors (as opposed to my martial arts ancestors, spiritual ancestors and artist ancestors) going back centuries were all farmers and I am very, VERY proud of that and of them (this farmer lineage dates back to the times that Hannibal invaded the region in the Punic Wars, in which case, they instantly became farmer/warriors as was the custom in Italy before the Romans established a professional army) . They lived close to the earth, and worked under the sun and stars, in tune with nature and Heaven's Way. They also had to deal with extreme poverty and hard work. Life was a struggle for existence for them and they lived in terrible poverty but, as Gong Baozai told Michael Guen: "...one's motherland offered a richer life, no matter how materially abundant it might be elsewhere." When I am there, I truly feel the strong qi from the land, water, air and also from the local food and wine we eat and drink there. I respect all of my ancestors as I would respect my grandparents if they were still alive. I am lucky to have such strong, hardworking and determined mountain ancestors and I know I am extremely lucky that my teacher shared a little wisdom from Gong Baozai with me. Green Mountain people are strong! And connected to nature in a spiritual way, while living in accordance with heavenly laws and in touch with the earth's natural rythms!

June 2017: Author's note:
As you can read below from the oldest post of this blog, this was originally a ten year artistic endeavor to empower my mind and brain. This has since changed and now is a life long study to perfect my character and to discover the true quality of human essence and an attempt to embrace the significance of human life.  Although I am posting many subject matters relating to Yin Style Ba Gua Quan, I am absolutely not an accomplished Ba Gua Quan practitioner. I only had the privilege of studying with my teacher (one of the most accomplished and extraordinary teachers one could find!) for three years. Three great years. I learned a lot of the basics in those three years (more than a traditional teacher would usually offer in three years) and for that I will be forever grateful to my teacher for what he transmitted to me and I will always consider him my teacher. So, I am fifty years old and if God grants me another thirty or forty years on this earth (of course, his will be done), I will practice those precious basics diligently and attempt to master them. So this is no longer a quest for brain power, but a life's path in pursuit of human life= which equals scholarship and warriorship- and an endeavor to develop a better character and become a more well-rounded human being. So, this could very well be a thirty or forty year path I am walking, God willing.

Charts and Maps of life journey art endeavor: Neurogenesis. Rediscovery of humanism. To cultivate into a well-rounded human being (scholar-warrior) is the most  important accomplishment in life. Maps, charts, and daily character logs to record experiences: labeled books of cantos. In one year I get an opportunity to reinvent myself as a martial artist, a visual artist, a poet, philosopher and a genuine human being and I won't get it wrong this time.

The 10th Guild has a New Home and a Rebirth

The 10th Guild is a Rebirth. A life's path. A respect for the OLD WORLD ORDER, both East and West.

So, this could very well be a thirty or forty year path I am walking, God willing.

Below was written a little after 2010

In December 2010, I started the 10th Guild blogspot in which I was attempting to document my artistic endeavor to change the anatomy of my brain and enhance the power of my mind. I was attempting to do this by thoroughly utilizing a combination of art and aesthetics, orthodox Chinese martial arts and all of the latest developments in cognitive science (which encompasses neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, linguistics, and anthropology). The blog was mainly a personal documentation of my progress and was sort of a personal notebook in which I could jot down main points while at the same time it was open for the public. My project was originally intended to be a ten year study, mainly because of expert studies on chunking and the development of synapses in the brain (ten years is a significant time period in becoming expert at subjects, like playing chess for example), but I eventually realized that this kind of undertaking would have to be a life time pursuit. The other game changer in my program came from self-examination and my Bagua Quan teacher. I realized that, while I could indeed empower my mind and make my brain much more effective, able and stronger, and in the process change the anatomy of my brain, my motives were very superficial and selfish. I was in pursuit of power. I did not realize this at the time, but I was in pursuit of power and, even though that power I desired was brain/mind power, it was an unhealthy desire just the same. My teacher's teacher, Gong Baozai once stated: "The problem with superficiality is not unique, but has been prevalent in all humankind since time immemorial. The challenge for humanity has always been to place higher value on personal integrity than on selfish reward." "A perspective narrowed by self-centeredness, greed, or arrogance breeds a disposition that demands that one always ends up on top," Gong Baozai taught. "This leaves little opportunity for gestures of genuine sentiment, which allow for the possibility of equal exchange. Without trust, respect, and sincerity placed at the forefront, practice of physical arts has a hard time penetrating to levels necessary to see this."  "A superficial understanding of oneself is like forever lightly brushing the surface of a canvas; sustaining a prolonged inquiry will always, in time, reveal more of a subject matter's inherent color, flavor, and substance."

I had to admit to myself that all I was planning on accomplishing through my neural/cognitive artistic project was in pursuit of selfish reward and power.

"You must channel the warrior force inward and upward for development of the higher intelligence, in addition to outward and downward. Open the body and release repressed anger and fear, nourish the brain and open the mind. Use the powers one garners to heal one's relationships and seek deeper insight into life. The original temple standard of being a master meant far more than being a proficient fighting technician or healer."

First of all, I was after a powerful mind and wanted to foster the development of a higher intelligence. Second, just as Gong Baozai adamently stated that Bagua Quan could not be "applied" to life because it IS life, I feel the same is true of all the arts (just one will not do but ALL of the arts must be applied  together to life so you can enhance your character and turn your life into a work of art. I want to apply the spiritual aspects and deeper intelligence of the martial arts to my art work, my aesthetic thought and my life as an artist. I have always declared that I adhere to the tenet of living ones life in unison with art. Life must be lived as if it were a work of art. Every day must be a work of genius . Through these endeavors I hope to enrich my artistic life, give clarity to my artistic voice and aesthetic thought, and keep my motives as an artist pure, unselfish and benevolent (in a rough art market where market place values and concern for sales dominate the art world).

Honor, integrity and creative force take first priority. I liken it to Shakespeare's quote: "my honor and my life, both grow as one, take honor from me and my life is done." And we can say that our life is art and our art is honor and how we create our art is honorable so, our life and art are one and take honor or art from us and our life is meaningless. Life is given meaning from art. Art is life, it is what makes life meaningful and joyful so we can smile from within. I am smiling from within when I paint and create within my own universe that was created by my own imagination.
